Saving on Funeral Costs

The unavoidable things are supposedly death and taxes. But along with death comes another unavoidable cost – the cost of arranging a funeral for a loved one.

For a person in debt, a sudden death in the family can leave them scrambling for ways to pay for the burial. It is a cost that one might have to endure.

While funeral can be pricy, there are things that can leave your mind at rest as you seek to lay your loved one to rest.

• If you or your loved one have planned ahead, then you could be out in front of the situation.  A person should state their preferences for funerals in writing, which can save the family money.
• If you would like to get information about the least expensive funeral options, it can be found by contacting the local branch of the Funeral Consumer Alliance or a memorial society.
• Shop around with funeral homes by asking for prices and getting an itemized price list from several places. Compare the choices to one another and make the best selection.
•  Watch out for scams.
• Don’t overspend due to emotion.
• Beware that items can sometimes be marked up as much as 3,000 percent.
• Ask if each item offered is mandated by law.
• Avoid package deals and their extra, unnecessary services.

There is no way to avoid the expense of an unexpected funeral. However, there are ways to soften the blow to your pocketbook.
