Have you ever found yourself moving from gas station to gas station trying to find the one that will save you three cents on the gallon? This might become a habit for people in debt.
There are easier and better ways to save more on gas costs. Mostly they involve better driving habits and, with it, better gas mileage.
The State of Michigan has itemized these recommendations that can help you get more miles out of your gasoline dollar.
- Drive sensibly – Aggressive driving can cut your gas mileage by up to one-third on the highway, and a good 5 percent off of it. It could save you between 13 cents and 85 cents per gallon of gas. It also can pay off with safety and avoiding the costs of collisions.
- Watch the speed limit – gas mileage often nosedives above 60 miles per hour. Each extra 5 mph can cost you 24 cents per gallon of gasoline. Each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.24 per gallon for gas. Like driving sensibly, watching the speed limit can also pay off with safety.
- Remove excess weight – In other words, take the junk out of the trunk. An extra 100 pounds reduces your miles per gallon by 2 percent. This simple step can save you 3 to 5 cents per gallon.
- Avoid idling – Idling gets a big goose-egg in the MPG category.
- Use cruise control – Cruise control keeps you from using fuel to move up in speed. A constant flow of gas helps save you gasoline.
- Use overdrive gears – The overdrive gears slows down the engine and saves you gasoline.
Using these guidelines, you should be able to save money on your gas bill and more safely use the roadways. Making money and doing the right thing – what a great combination!
